I'm excited to invite everyone to our First Day of Issue of the "Island Aviation Through the Decades". Beth Gregerson, Mary Gill, and myself will be returning from Rattlesnake Island on Tuesday Sept. 10th, 2024 with the first day covers. Thomas Griffing III will taxi us over to the Liberty Aviation Museum (3515 E State Rd., Port Clinton) located next door to the Airport and set up for the 1:00 pm ceremony. Beth (the stamp designer/artist), myself, and perhaps a pilot or so will give a short talk about the stamps and life of an island pilot.
This issue is dedicated to the brave pilots that flew planes with few modern improvements in adverse weather conditions and rough short unimproved runways. Imagine taking off and landing a dozen times a day in a very loud, no air conditioned, older plane in adverse weather just to land on a short slippery rough grass runway. Thank you pilots for bringing passengers, food, medicine, and the mail among other interesting items year around.
After the speakers have finished, the USPS will be set up to cancel the first day covers with the special Ford Tri-Motor pictorial postmark as well as Beth and I will be on hand to sign covers.
We will also have FDC's and stamps available to purchase.
